Find out what happened during the RIB Amazing Food Trail 2008: A brand new event by RIB where teams raced to explore Singapore.

A total of 22 teams participated in RIB’s Amazing Food Trail 2008 on August 31, 2008. From the starting line in Dining Hall, the teams raced, cheered, ate, solved puzzles and played games to the finish line back in RIB.

Here’s how the race was played. The event started in the Dining Hall. Each team received a puzzle to their first checkpoint. Once they managed to solve it, they were handed over an envelope containing the name of of their first checkpoint, a map and a list of questions to answer. The team would then go to their first checkpoint where they played games and ate food as fast as possible to get their next puzzle to the next checkpoint. At each checkpoint, a different game was played and different food was given. Each team had to clear 4 checkpoints to complete the race.

FOOD

As the name suggests, food is a major component of the event. Here is a list of food the teams ‘had to’ eat:

Recently, a Vietnamese living on the 6th floor of Hullet block has left for The United States to pursue further education. He is Tutor Quoc Anh.

Being a junior of the same nationality, I feel really sad when he left, as he is a wonderful and inspiring senior to us. He constantly motivate us to try our best in everything, especially our study. Quoc is an all-rounded and brilliant person and we really have had a great time with him around.

I hope that somewhere in The States, Quoc will be able to read this message and know that all of us miss him very much. We are extremely proud to have such a dazzling leader and senior.

And I believe, whenever he may be, he will be one shining star!

As per today, Quoc is currently in Vietnam. Anyone who wanted to contact Quoc can email Pham Viet Hai at admin@riboarding.com

An insight on boarders life by Benjamin Lo & Tran Minh Viet dispels the fallacy surrounding muggers-creatures that roam Raffles Institution Boarding School

by Benjamin Lo & Tran Minh Viet

Being a Morrison boarder myself, I have always surprised my friends when they ask me what I do every day. They always presumed that scholars and boarders only mug, mug and mug, but the truth is that mugging is hardly the case for most of the boarders here. So, ever thought what a boarder does for the whole day? Especially RJC & RI boarders who live right beside school and enjoy the wonderful luxury of 1 minute travel time to school (no offence to those living 1 hour from school :D)?

We Have Social Live

Despite outsider’s perception that our time table revolves around mug, eat and sleep, we actually do have a social life. So what do we do every day during our free time? Actually Morrison has been a home to quite a few CCALs(Co-Curriculum Activity Leaders). May it be sports CCA, academic CCA or student interest groups. This stands as proof that boarders can be as versatile as normal students.

Even if we are not CCALs in sports CCA, most of us enjoy sports as hobby, be it basketball, soccer, badminton, tennis, swimming or floorball. All thanks to the myriad of first-class facilities in Raffles Institution. With the Intra-boarding sports days and pool competition coming up, RI boarding has its share of activities to let boarders have some fun once in a while.

In addition to being healthy normal teenagers when it comes to sports, we also hangout frequently with our friends at malls or have a movie or two once in a while. Sometimes prefer a good game of snooker or bowling when we feel like having a break. If boarders are fed up of travelling out of Bishan, we can always see boarders from RI boarding at the famous haunt – Junction 8 anytime of the day, maybe to get some groceries, buy some stationary or just to have a breather from the boarding’s atmosphere.

Yet we study

Of course, a boarder or student cannot be complete without some occasional mugging. Rest assured, we are quite capable of sitting down and studying independently. Other than the boarding rule of preparation time (a.k.a. prep time) or study time from 7.45pm to 9.45pm on Sundays until Thursdays, you will also see some boarders studying in their rooms or at RI S. Rajaratnam Block or RJC canteen and library during weekends.

So all in all, RI boarding school boarders, especially Morrison boarders, as a whole are just line any other normal teenage student. We study hard and we play hard too!

Pham Hung Anh contemplates the merit of Raffles Institution Boarding School from his own perspective as secondary school boarder at new Hullet block

“Hey, your boarding is so cool: Big room with only two people living in each room, some even have air-conditioner! Our boarding is everything opposite to yours!”

This was what I kept lamenting to my friends from other boarding school every time we had batch outing, with sullen faces as compared to those all-too-happy faces of people staying in supposedly superb and decidedly better boarding than ours. How bad of last year’s boarding I am talking about? 4-people rooms, one ceiling fan and one shared toilet, which were not always kept in tip-top conditions.

With all these said, I suppose you or whoever reading this article has so dreaded this boarding. However, before you have any weird idea of buying gasoline and trying to burn down the boarding so that the school has to build a new facilitity, let me remind you that this place, in its respectable thirteen-year history, has housed thousands of scholars, who have evolved from simple teenagers into independent, knowledgeable and responsible adults. In fact, boarding life has been improved much since the first time this boarding went into service, as told to us by Mr. Chow Kia Meng, our dear former senior boarding master.

While we all have had issues with the boarding in one way or another, none can deny that boarding life has helped us to make friends with people from various countries and to appreciate many unique cultures and customs through various activities, such as soccer and basketball tournaments, and various events, such as formal dinners, RIB Idol and etcetera. Such exposure has undoubtedly broadened our perspectives. Personally, I am grateful to be exposed to a myriad of good friends who are willing to help us whenever we have problems. Even the food, while remaining our favorite “punching bag”, becomes edible after a while, when you came to enjoy other countries’ cuisines.

Live changes

Honestly, life is getting better in RIB as I came back to RIB after a long break in January. From January 2008 onward, secondary school boarders would be able to live in the brand new thirteen stories block, featuring two speedy lifts, spacious game rooms and two-people bedrooms! No longer that we have to bring our heavy suitcase all the way up to our rooms after a home trip thanks to the new lifts! There is more as we are going to have our very own wireless connection in our room this August. Some of our non-RIB friends are even jealous of what we get here, Indeed, all things keep getting better and better.

With many shortcomings that I have mentioned above, one would have low expectations of this boarding, and that would exactly be my advice to you: Keep your expectation low, and you will find yourself indulged in some pleasant surprises that are unlikely to forget.

DUJIANGYAN, China - China on Monday lowered flags to half-mast, suspended its Olympic torch relay and curbed entertainment as the nation began three days of mourning for its worst earthquake in a generation.

In solemn scenes broadcast on state television, Chinese soldiers performed the daily raising of the national flag at Beijing’s imposing Tiananmen Square, then lowered it to half-mast in memory of the estimated 50,000 quake dead.

China will hold three minutes of silence at 2:28 pm (0628 GMT), the exact moment a week ago that the powerful tremor — upgraded to 8.0 on the Richter scale — reduced entire towns to heaps of steel and concrete.
